Since the class is coming to an end very soon, we asked our students and our professor Dr. Lora Warner about the class and how it has made an impact on them!
Congratulations to Family Services of NEW on receiving our $10,000 grant. At the beginning of this week, we held our event to announce and award the recipient of our grant. We had a great turnout of other students, faculty and staff members, along with some community members. Our decision was hard, but with a lot of thinking and discussing, our class was able to come to an agreement and do what we have been waiting for all semester! The journey throughout the semester was enjoyable, challenging at times, and a great learning experience. This class provided a unique opportunity for us to learn in a different way and it gave us many memories that we can appreciate when looking back on our college experience. Thanks to the Learning by Giving Foundation, UWGB, Dr. Warner, and anyone else who made this possible. Thank you for following along with us this semester!
2018 Request for Proposal Overview For the fifth consecutive year, the Learning by Giving Foundation will grant $10,000 to an organization chosen by the University of Wisconsin Green Bay’s 2018 Strategic Philanthropy course. Through this course, students become involved in the philanthropic process as they identify an issue in their community and strategically award one-time funding to a 501(c)(3) organization to address the issue. We are seeking proposals for programs to educate and increase awareness of human trafficking in the Brown County community. Human trafficking is a growing trend in our area, but there is a common misconception among community members that trafficking doesn’t happen here. With greater awareness and knowledge of the problem, we believe that trafficking can be reduced and eventually eradicated. Goal Our goal is to provide education about how to recognize and prevent human trafficking to individuals at risk of becoming traffick...
Last week after much discussion, our class identified four problem areas in our community. These four problem areas included: Suicide Prevention, Sex Education, Early Childhood Development, and Human Trafficking. We then formed groups and interviewed individuals in the community who were well versed on our issues of choice, and did additional research to create a paper and presentation for our class. However, we had a late start to this week due to snow and ice storms here in Wisconsin, but our Strategic Philanthropy class really got the “snow ball” rolling and we were able to present our topics. After having listened to all four amazing and informative presentations, our class will reflect on the topics and come to a decision on our final topic area next class period.Check back for pictures and information on our class presentations!
