Class Research and Presentations

Last week after much discussion, our class identified four problem areas in our community. These four problem areas included: Suicide Prevention, Sex Education, Early Childhood Development, and Human Trafficking. We then formed groups and interviewed individuals in the community who were well versed on our issues of choice, and did additional research to create a paper and presentation for our class. However, we had a late start to this week due to snow and ice storms here in Wisconsin, but our Strategic Philanthropy class really got the “snow ball” rolling and we were able to present our topics. After having listened to all four amazing and informative presentations, our class will reflect on the topics and come to a decision on our final topic area next class period.Check back for pictures and information on our class presentations!

Congratulations to Family Services of NEW on receiving our $10,000 grant.  At the beginning of this week, we held our event to announce and award the recipient of our grant.  We had a great turnout of other students, faculty and staff members, along with some community members.  Our decision was hard, but with a lot of thinking and discussing, our class was able to come to an agreement and do what we have been waiting for all semester!  The journey throughout the semester was enjoyable, challenging at times, and a great learning experience.  This class provided a unique opportunity for us to learn in a different way and it gave us many memories that we can appreciate when looking back on our college experience.  Thanks to the Learning by Giving Foundation, UWGB, Dr. Warner, and anyone else who made this possible.  Thank you for following along with us this semester!

Our Four Topics and Groups!

Hello everyone! We decided our top four topics; suicide prevention, early childhood development, sex education, and human trafficking. We have presented each of the topics to the class and are in the process of deciding our top choice! Check out all the information on each group’s topic! One of our possible topic of choice is suicide prevention. Suicide prevention is a topic that comes up after the tragedy has already occurred. For so long, America has been reactive to suicide awareness and prevention. With so many individuals taking their own lives it is time that we, as a society, need to make suicide prevention a proactive intervention. We want to make  Public education sessions more available to address suicide awareness and prevention so it can show individuals where they can go in a time of need and it can teach individuals how to detect suicidal behavior. The Triangle for Human Trafficking

The triangle that exists through Green Bay, Chicago, and Minneapolis is an avenue for human traffickers to transport their victims. Traffickers oftentimes start in Chicago, transport their victims through the Green Bay area and then take them westward to eastern Minnesota. Sometimes they come back to Chicago, which forms the triangle. This cycle of movement is repetitive in nature. Experts are aware of this triangle, yet are unable to completely stop all of the activity because the evidence can be difficult to detect. Much of this occurs near highways such as Interstate 94, which is the main road linking Chicago to Green Bay. Other highways that may be being used by traffickers include I-43, I-41, I-29 and I-39. The triangle has been described by the Sexual Assault Center of Family Services, which is a group dedicated to supporting victims through much of the affected areas [i] .
